Read the scenario and ask yourself, What would I do?

Scenario:

You have been responding to ambulance calls for some time now. You have seen all types of medical and trauma situations. Your confidence has been growing and you feel good about your new role. There are a few things you have not yet encountered, however. You have just returned from a routine call, and you are restocking the ambulance. You and your partner review some of the things you have not yet seen.


1:  You arrive at the scene of a tractor trailer truck leaking liquid contents of several barrels onto the highway. The driver has walked away from the cab into this liquid, and has now fallen. What should you do?
A: Stay back even if you can see the driver is injured. Wait for the fire department to arrive and declare the area safe to enter.
B: Rush in quickly to pull the driver out of the liquid. This way, care can be given safely.
C: Ask the driver to come out on his own if he can. Once he is away from the truck you can start to treat him.
D: Only one of you should go in to treat the patient. You can switch places later, reducing the time each of you will have to be in the hazardous area.

2:  One of the roles of the EMT-B at the scene of a hazardous materials spill is to assist:
A: in keeping bystanders back.
B: in decontamination.
