Transition Guide- Mistovich Seventhth Edition to Jones & Bartlett Ninthth Edition

This guide is designed to assist instructors in transitioning from Brady's Mistovich Seventh Edition (2004) to Jones and Bartlett's Emergency Careand Transportation of the Sick and Injured, Ninth Edition (2005). It is assumed that all EMT-B textbooks on the market cover the material established for the DOT EMT-Basic curriculum. The summaries that follow identify analogous chapters by chapter numbers and highlight the unique qualities of Emergency Care of the Sick and Injured, Ninth Edition.

Chapter 1: Introduction to Emergency Care, pp2-21

A clear description of the EMT-Basic course, including a description of training goals and certification requirements, is given. Greater detail is given relating to the history of EMS in the United States.

Chapter 2: The Well-Being of the EMT, pp22-69
(Mistovich 2, pp12-28)

In this chapter, workplace issues, including cultural diversity and sexual harassment, are explored. Risk factors include lightning, power lines, and fire are also covered.

Chapter 3: Medical, Legal and Ethical Issues, pp70-89

Special Reporting Requirements are examined in greater detail, highlighting seven specific situations. HIPPA is described and the implications for EMT-Basics is addressed.

Chapter 6: Lifting and Moving Patients pp168-207

This chapter includes: giving directions and commands during patient moves, a strong focus on rescuer safety, and an illustrated montage of rapid extrication from a vehicle. A complete, illustrated guide to the tools used to move patients is provided (scoop stretcher, KED, stair chair, etc.) The Mistovich book is focused solely on rescuer body mechanics. Mistovich covers the remaining material in its thirty-ninth chapter, "Moving Patients."

An excellent introduction to pulmonary anatomy and physiology starts the chapter. The Special Consideration section highlights gastric distension, stomas, and tracheostomy tubes. Foreign body airway obstruction is examined with a focus on dental appliances and facial bleeding.
