A clear description of the EMT-Basic course, including a description of training goals and certification requirements, is given. Greater detail is given relating to the history of EMS in the United States.
Chapter 2: The Well-Being of the EMT, pp22-69 (Mistovich 2, pp12-28)
In this chapter, workplace issues, including cultural diversity and sexual harassment, are explored. Risk factors include lightning, power lines, and fire are also covered.
Chapter 3: Medical, Legal and Ethical Issues, pp70-89 (Mistovich 3, pp29-39)
Special Reporting Requirements are examined in greater detail, highlighting seven specific situations. HIPPA is described and the implications for EMT-Basics is addressed.
Chapter 4: The Human Body, pp90-143 (Mistovich 4, pp40-71)
This chapter includes greater detail and outstanding illustrations to help students develop a strong sense of human anatomy. Special attention is paid to the differences in pediatric patients and their special needs.
Chapter 5: Baseline Vitals and SAMPLE History, pp144-167 (Mistovich 5, pp72-85)
This chapter provides guidelines on interviewing patients, establishing the chief complaint, and using the AVPU scale to assess responsiveness.
Chapter 6: Lifting and Moving Patients pp168-207 (Mistovich 6, pp86-94)
This chapter includes: giving directions and commands during patient moves, a strong focus on rescuer safety, and an illustrated montage of rapid extrication from a vehicle. A complete, illustrated guide to the tools used to move patients is provided (scoop stretcher, KED, stair chair, etc.) The Mistovich book is focused solely on rescuer body mechanics. Mistovich covers the remaining material in its thirty-ninth chapter, "Moving Patients."
