When the lungs fail to receive oxygen it is called respiratory arrest. Respiratory arrest can result from a number of causes such as asthma, injuries to the chest, and airway obstructions. If breathing is disrupted, the lack of oxygen to the body will cause other systems to function incorrectly and completely shut down.
Respiratory arrest may be caused by:
poisoning or inhaling toxic substances
heart attack or heart disease
injury to the lungs or chest
drowning and suffocation
emphysema and asthma
airway obstruction
allergic reactions
hyperventilation
shock
drugs
