Section I Preparing to be an EMT-B:

Chapter 1
Introduction to Emergency Medical Care (Brady 9th Edition Chapter 1)

All chapters are prefaced with a "You are the EMT" section. This helps to direct the students thinking and uses real world examples to spark interest. The chapter begins by explaining the EMT-B course and the focus and requirements of EMT-B training. This is information that is not found in other books. This helps set expectations for educational and performance early. It tells them that no matter where the course is offered, EMT-B standards must be met.

Chapter 2
The Well-Being of the EMT-B (Brady 9th Edition Chapter 2)

This chapter provides additional information on cultural diversity and workplace issues not addressed in other books. It also focuses on issues such as avoiding sexual harassment, substance abuse, proper nutrition for the EMT-B, and protective clothing.

Chapter 3
Medical, Legal, and Ethical Issues (Brady 9th Edition Chapter 3)

Chapter 4
The Human Body (Brady 9th Edition Chapter 4)

This chapter provides much greater coverage of the human body systems and functions than other texts. The musculoskeletal system and joint movement are presented in greater detail and explained well to the novice. The digestive system and urinary system are covered as well; they are not covered in the Brady text.

Chapter 5
Baseline Vital Signs and SAMPLE History (Brady 9th Edition Chapter 9)

This chapter begins by stating the need to gather key patient information and establishing a chief complaint. These actions form the basis of any patient assessment. It also addresses obtaining a Glascow Coma Scale rating for the patient and briefly explores the concept of vital sign trending through continuous reassessment. Both are areas uncovered by Brady.

Chapter 6
Lifting and Moving Patients (Brady 9th Edition Chapter 5)

This chapter provides extensive coverage of proper lifting techniques and body mechanics. It also provides step-by-step directions on how to carry out a variety of lifts and moves to help reduce the risk of injury to the EMT-B. The concept of rapid extrication is left uncovered in other texts, is covered in step-by-step detail here.
